The Open Community was created in 2006, as a result of the interest of some Firefox Chile and LinuxChillán members that found a lack of a moment to share and get close to all the others communities related to FLOSS in Chile. Since then, national events were based on the spread of support information (Linux Meeting) and new members (for example, FLISOL), but nothing created to mix all the information and experiences of the whole family of FLOSS in Chile, into a real event, with sponsoring companies, marketing, etc.
The first event took place in late March, 2006, in the Engineering and Business Faculty of UCINF (Informatics Science University) in Santiago, Chile. There was a two-days meeting with 400 people, and 273 of them were accredited. During the event, there were several lectures where some communities and theirs activities were remarkable. The event finish with a round table, where it was argue about users and free software closeness. One of the assistant talked about his own experiences about it.
The second event took place on June, 2007, in the same place. More than 400 people this time, and 332 acreditated in a two-days meeting. There were technical and philosophical lectures, educating workshops related to FLOSS tools in different areas (web production, graph, audiovisual production and education) There were Argentine presentations, as well. LUGMen (Linux User Group Mendoza), CaFeLUG (Federal Capital GNU/Linux User Group), and some member of Proyecto Alba. In this way, the Open Community leads a path into Latin America. This second event was organized by Firefox Chile, LinuxChillán and Ubuntu Chile community members. Ubuntu Chile provided a precious staff support.
